What size chandelier do I need for my dining room?
For a chandelier over a dining table, match the diameter to roughly half to two-thirds the width of the table. For general room sizing, a widely used rule: add the room's length and width in metres, then read that number in centimetres as your guide diameter - so a 4 × 5 m room suits a chandelier around 90 cm wide. When in doubt, size up slightly: a chandelier that fills the ceiling reads as intentional; one that's too small looks like a mistake.
How high should a chandelier hang above a dining table?
Hang the bottom of the chandelier 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop for a standard 2.4 m ceiling. Add approximately 8 cm for every extra 30 cm of ceiling height above that. The goal is for the fixture to read as part of the table setting - low enough to be intimate, high enough that no one ducks.
How do I clean a crystal chandelier?
Switch off the power and allow the bulbs to cool fully - at least 20 minutes. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth to prevent build-up. For a deeper clean, wipe each crystal with a barely damp lint-free cloth and dry it immediately - never spray cleaner directly onto the fixture or let moisture sit near the fittings. Removable crystals can be hand-washed in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid, rinsed, dried completely, and refitted.
Can a chandelier hang in a high stairwell or double-height room?
Yes - and a double-height stairwell or entry is one of the best possible homes for a chandelier. Cascading and tiered chandeliers are designed exactly for these spaces. Most Havelalights models offer adjustable chain or rod length so you can set the drop precisely for your ceiling. Measure floor to ceiling, decide how low you want the base to sit, and choose accordingly - product pages list maximum drop as standard.
How heavy are chandeliers, and do I need special ceiling support?
Weights are listed on every product page. Fixtures under approximately 10 kg mount to a standard rated ceiling electrical box. Heavier crystal and cascading pieces need a fixture-rated box or a direct joist fixing - a qualified electrician can confirm which applies to your ceiling in minutes. Never assume a standard plasterboard box will hold a large chandelier without checking.
Do I need an electrician to install a chandelier?
For a straightforward like-for-like swap onto an existing ceiling rose, many people do it themselves in 20 to 30 minutes following the included instructions. For heavy fixtures, new wiring, high ceilings or any uncertainty about your ceiling's load rating, a qualified electrician is strongly recommended - both for safety and to keep the warranty intact.
How many bulbs does a chandelier use, and what wattage?
It varies from 3 to 12 or more depending on the model - the exact bulb count and type are listed on each product page. We include dimmable warm-white LEDs (typically 4–6 W each) with the vast majority of chandeliers, so total energy use stays very low even with many arms. A 12-arm chandelier using 5 W LED bulbs draws less than a single old 75 W halogen.
Are chandeliers dimmable?
Most are, with a compatible leading-edge dimmer switch and dimmable LED bulbs. A dimmer is the single best investment you can make alongside a chandelier - it takes the piece from bright and functional to warm and atmospheric at the turn of a dial. Dimmability is confirmed on every product page; if you're buying for a dining room or living room, we'd always recommend pairing it with one.
Can a chandelier be installed on a sloped ceiling?
Yes, with a sloped-ceiling canopy adaptor, available for most models. The chandelier itself hangs perfectly vertical from the chain or rod - only the ceiling canopy needs adapting to meet the angled surface. If your ceiling is sloped, mention it when ordering and we'll confirm compatibility.
Do chandeliers come with bulbs included?

What's the difference between a chandelier and a pendant light?
A chandelier is a multi-arm or multi-tier statement fixture designed to define a room. A pendant is a single shade or globe on one cable - cleaner, more focused, better for task lighting over a kitchen island or workspace. If you want one light to become the room's focal point, it's a chandelier. If you want clean directional light, it's a pendant.
Can a chandelier go in a bedroom or a room with a low ceiling?
Yes - for low ceilings, choose a compact globe, drum or flush-mount chandelier rather than a tall crystal or cascading piece. For ceilings under 2.4 m, a low-profile or semi-flush chandelier gives you the full visual impact without the headroom issue. In a bedroom, hang it centred in the room rather than directly over the bed, and pair it with a dimmer for full range from reading light to near-off.
How do I change a bulb in a chandelier?
Switch off the power and let the bulbs cool fully before touching them. Most candle-arm and globe chandeliers take a standard screw-in LED that twists out in seconds. Many Havelalights chandeliers use long-life LEDs rated to 15,000 hours or more - at four hours a day, that's over ten years between changes. Do bulb checks during your annual clean so they're never a surprise.
Do chandeliers arrive pre-assembled?
Smaller models arrive mostly assembled and are ready to hang in under 30 minutes. Larger crystal and cascading pieces ship with crystals or globes packed separately to protect them in transit - they're attached during installation following a numbered layout card included in the box. It takes a little time but no special tools or skills.
