The things people actually ask before buying a table lamp.
What size table lamp do I need for my nightstand or side table?
A good rule: the lamp should be no taller than about 1.5 times the height of the table, and the shade should be roughly the width of the nightstand or a little narrower. As a quick check, when seated, the bottom of the shade should sit near eye level so the bulb stays hidden.
How tall should a bedside table lamp be?
Most bedside lamps work best between 40 and 70cm tall, sized so the shade bottom is around eye level when you are sitting up in bed. That hides the bulb and puts soft light on your book without shining in your eyes.
What is the right lamp-to-table proportion?
Aim for the lamp to take up about one-third the visual width of the surface and to sit comfortably below any artwork or mirror behind it. Too big and it crowds the table; too small and it looks lost.
Do table lamps come with a bulb and shade?
Yes. Havela table lamps ship complete with their shade (where the design has one) and a dimmable warm-white LED bulb, unless the product page states otherwise.
Are table lamps dimmable, and do any have touch control?
Most are dimmable with a compatible bulb and dimmer, and a growing number of our bedside models have built-in touch dimming, so you tap the base to cycle through brightness levels. Touch and dimming options are noted on each product page.
What bulb wattage is best for a bedside lamp?
For a bedside lamp you want soft, low light, so a warm-white LED of around 4 to 6W (roughly 400 lumens) is ideal. If you read in bed, choose a model with a dimmer so you can go brighter when needed and low for winding down.
Can I use a table lamp for reading in bed?
Yes, if you pick one tall enough to bring light down onto the page (shade bottom near eye level) and ideally dimmable or with an adjustable head. A dedicated swing-arm or directional model is best if reading is the main use.
What size shade should I choose if I am replacing one?
A balanced shade is usually about two-thirds the height of the lamp base and at least as wide as the base is tall, so the base stays hidden. Bring the old shade fitting type (clip, spider or screw) when matching a replacement.
Do any table lamps have USB ports?
Select models, especially bedside and desk lamps, include a built-in USB-A or USB-C port for charging a phone overnight. Look for the USB icon on the product page.
What colour temperature suits a bedroom table lamp?
Stick to warm white (around 3000K) in bedrooms and living rooms; it is relaxing and flattering. Reserve cooler tones for a desk lamp used for focused work.
