A table lamp is the light that makes a house feel lived in.

It sits on the nightstand, the sideboard, the hall console, and it's the first light you reach for and the last you turn off. A good table lamp is small, but it sets the whole mood of a room. This is a guide to choosing one worth keeping.

Ceramic table lamp on a bedside table

Ceramic table lamps. Weight you can feel.

Ceramic is the most grounding material a lamp can wear, solid, tactile and quietly handmade. A glazed base in stone, oat or deep blue brings warmth to a nightstand or sideboard before it's even switched on. Pair it with a linen shade and it reads timeless.

It suits bedrooms, living rooms and any surface that wants a soft anchor.

A ceramic lamp feels like it was made by hand, because it was.

The things people actually ask before buying a table lamp.

What size table lamp do I need for my nightstand or side table?

A good rule: the lamp should be no taller than about 1.5 times the height of the table, and the shade should be roughly the width of the nightstand or a little narrower. As a quick check, when seated, the bottom of the shade should sit near eye level so the bulb stays hidden.

How tall should a bedside table lamp be?

Most bedside lamps work best between 40 and 70 cm tall, sized so the shade bottom is around eye level when you're sitting up in bed. That hides the bulb and puts soft light on your book without shining in your eyes.

What's the right lamp-to-table proportion?

Aim for the lamp to take up about one-third the visual width of the surface and to sit comfortably below any artwork or mirror behind it. Too big and it crowds the table; too small and it looks lost.

Do table lamps come with a bulb and shade?

Yes. Havela table lamps ship complete with their shade (where the design has one) and a dimmable warm-white LED bulb, unless the product page states otherwise.

Are table lamps dimmable, and do any have touch control?

Most are dimmable with a compatible bulb and dimmer, and a growing number of our bedside models have built-in touch dimming, tap the base to cycle through brightness levels. Touch and dimming options are noted on each product page.

What bulb wattage is best for a bedside lamp?

For a bedside lamp you want soft, low light, a warm-white LED of around 4 to 6 W (roughly 400 lumens) is ideal. If you read in bed, choose a model with a dimmer so you can go brighter when needed and low for winding down.

Can I use a table lamp for reading in bed?

Yes, if you pick one tall enough to bring light down onto the page (shade bottom near eye level) and ideally dimmable or with an adjustable head. A dedicated swing-arm or directional model is best if reading is the main use.

What size shade should I choose if I'm replacing one?

A balanced shade is usually about two-thirds the height of the lamp base and at least as wide as the base is tall, so the base stays hidden. Bring the old shade's fitting type (clip, spider or screw) when matching a replacement.

Do any table lamps have USB ports?

Select models, especially bedside and desk lamps, include a built-in USB-A or USB-C port for charging a phone overnight. Look for the USB icon on the product page.

What colour temperature suits a bedroom table lamp?

Stick to warm white (around 3000K) in bedrooms and living rooms, it's relaxing and flattering. Reserve cooler 3000K to 3500K for a desk lamp used for focused work.

How many table lamps do I need in a room?

As a guide, a living room feels balanced with two to three table or accent lamps placed around it, on a sideboard, a side table and a console, so the light is spread rather than coming from one point. Two matched lamps either side of a sofa or bed is the classic starting pair.

Should a pair of bedside lamps match?

A matched pair gives a calm, symmetrical look and is the safest choice. Mixing two different lamps of similar height and tone can look intentional and relaxed, just keep the scale and light colour consistent so the bedside balance holds.

Can I put a table lamp on a dimmer?

Yes, three ways: a dimmable bulb with an inline cord dimmer, a plug-in dimmer at the socket, or one of our touch-dimming models that adjust by tapping the base. Any of these lets you drop a bedside lamp to a soft, sleep-friendly glow.

What's the best table lamp for a living room?

For a living room, a medium ceramic or fabric-shaded lamp on a side table gives warm, diffuse light that's easy to live with. If the lamp sits on a low table beside seating, choose one tall enough that the shade bottom is near eye level when you're sitting down.
