A floor lamp is the light you move in to a room, not wire in.
No electrician, no holes in the ceiling, just lift it, plug it in, and the corner of the room changes. A floor lamp is the most flexible light you'll own. This is a guide to choosing one that earns its spot for years.
Arc floor lamps. Light that leans in.
The arc lamp solves an old problem: how to get light over the middle of a sofa or table without a ceiling fixture. Its long curved stem reaches out and drops the light exactly where you need it, while the base stays tucked safely to the side.
It's the closest thing to a pendant you can buy without touching the ceiling.
An arc lamp is a pendant that brought its own ceiling.
Tripod floor lamps. Stable, and a little cinematic.
Borrowed from film sets and photographers' studios, the tripod lamp plants three legs wide and holds its shade high and proud. It's stable, sculptural and reads as a design object even when switched off, equally at home in wood, brass or matte black.
It suits living rooms that want a bit of character in the corner.
A tripod lamp looks like it knows something you don't.
Built to outlast trends, in shapes you'll still love a decade in.

The things people actually ask before buying a floor lamp.
How tall should a floor lamp be?
For ambient and reading lamps, the bottom of the shade should sit roughly at eye level when you're seated, about 100 to 150 cm from the floor. That keeps the bulb out of sight and the light where you need it. Uplights and arc lamps run taller by design.
Where should I place a floor lamp?
Beside a sofa or reading chair for task light, in a dark corner for ambient lift, or behind a seat with an arc lamp to reach over it. Keep reading lamps slightly behind and to the side of the chair so the light falls over your shoulder onto the page.
What's the difference between an arc lamp and a reading lamp?
An arc lamp has a long curved stem that reaches out over a sofa or table, giving broad overhead-style light. A reading lamp is slim and upright with a focused, often adjustable head for precise task light on a single chair.
Do floor lamps come with bulbs?
Yes, the vast majority ship with a dimmable warm-white LED included. Any exception is noted on the product page.
Are floor lamps dimmable?
Many have a built-in dimmer or foot switch; the rest work with a dimmable bulb on a plug-in or wall dimmer. Dimming is noted on each product page.
How much light does a floor lamp give? Can it be the main light in a room?
An uplight or a multi-bulb arc lamp can comfortably light a small to medium room on its own, look for 1,500 lumens or more. A focused reading lamp is a supplement, not a sole source. Lumen output is listed on every product page.
Are floor lamps stable, or do they tip over easily?
Our floor lamps are weighted for stability, arc and tripod models especially, with heavy marble or cast bases to counterbalance the reach. If you have small children or pets, choose a wide tripod or a heavy-based arc for extra security.
What bulb base do floor lamps use?
Most use a standard E27 (large screw) or E14 (small screw) base, stated on the product page. Where a bulb is included it's already the correct fit.
Do floor lamps have a switch on the lamp itself?
Yes, every Havela floor lamp has its own switch, on the cord, the body or as a foot switch, so you don't need a switched wall socket. Many reading and arc models include a dimmer in the switch.
What colour temperature should a floor lamp be?
For living rooms and bedrooms, warm white (around 3000K) is the comfortable choice. For a dedicated reading or work lamp, a slightly cooler 3000K can improve focus without feeling clinical.
Do floor lamps use a lot of electricity?
No. With the LED bulbs we supply, even a multi-light arc lamp draws only a few watts per bulb, far less than old halogen or incandescent lamps. Running one for an evening costs a fraction of a cent.
Can a floor lamp replace the ceiling light in a rental?
Yes, that's one of the best uses for a floor lamp. An uplight or a multi-bulb arc lamp can light a whole room without touching the wiring, ideal where you can't change the ceiling fixture. Look for 1,500 lumens or more as a sole source.
What's the best floor lamp for a dark corner?
A torchiere uplight, it bounces soft light off the ceiling and lifts the whole corner without glare. For a corner you also read in, a globe or shaded floor lamp gives ambient light plus a usable pool below.
How do I keep the cable from being a trip hazard?
Place the lamp close to a socket, run the cord along the skirting or behind furniture, and use the cable clips many of our lamps include. For arc lamps that reach into a room, position the base against a wall or behind a sofa so the cord stays out of walkways.
