Wall lights free a room from looking up for its light.

Mounted at eye level, a wall light works where ceiling fixtures can't, beside a bed, up a stairway, along a hallway, flanking a mirror. It's the most architectural light in the house. This is a guide to placing and choosing it well.

Pair of wall sconces flanking a bathroom mirror

Sconces. The quiet workhorse of the wall.

The sconce is the all-rounder, a shade or a small fixture mounted close to the wall, throwing light up, down or both. Flanking a mirror it gives even, flattering light; along a hallway it breaks up a long blank wall. In glass, metal or fabric, there's a sconce for every room.

Choose an IP44 version for bathrooms near the basin.

A sconce is the light a wall wears like a good lamp.

Swing arm wall light beside a bed

Swing-arm wall lights. Light that reaches the page.

The swing-arm mounts to the wall but moves like a desk lamp, pulling light out over a bed or an armchair exactly where you read, then folding back when you don't. Beside a bed it frees the nightstand entirely and puts a focused beam on the book, not your partner.

It's the reading light for anyone short on bedside space.

A swing-arm lamp gives you a nightstand back.

Dimmable, warm-white LEDs ship with the vast majority of our lights. No tools, no jargon.

The things people actually ask before buying a wall light.

How high should wall lights be mounted?

It depends on the use. General hallway and living-room sconces sit around 150 to 170 cm from the floor (roughly eye level). Bedside wall lights go about 90 to 110 cm above the floor, or 50 to 60 cm above the mattress. Either side of a mirror, mount at around 160 to 170 cm.

Where should I place wall sconces?

In pairs either side of a bed, mirror or fireplace for symmetry, or evenly spaced along a hallway (about every 2.5 to 3 m) to break up a long wall. Keep them clear of door swings and at a consistent height throughout a space.

Do wall lights need hardwiring, or are there plug-in options?

Both exist. Many of our sconces and swing-arm lights come in a plug-in version with a cord and switch, so you can mount them without an electrician. Hardwired versions give the cleanest look but need a wired wall point. Battery models are also available, especially for picture lights.

Can I install a wall light without existing wiring?

Yes, choose a plug-in or battery model. Plug-in lights mount with a couple of screws and run a discreet cord to the nearest socket; battery picture lights need no wiring at all. For a fully hidden, hardwired install, an electrician can add a wall point.

Are wall lights suitable for bathrooms?

Only models with the right IP rating. For lights near a basin or within the bathroom zones, choose IP44 or higher, listed on the product page. Outside the splash zones, standard indoor wall lights are fine, but always check local electrical regulations.

Do wall lights come with bulbs?

Yes, the vast majority include a warm-white LED. Integrated-LED models have the light source built in and never need a bulb change for many years. Exceptions are noted on the product page.

Are wall lights dimmable?

Most are, with a compatible dimmer and dimmable bulb, or via an inline switch on plug-in models. Dimmability is confirmed on each product page; bedside and hallway lights especially benefit from it.

How far apart should multiple wall lights be spaced?

Along a hallway or large wall, space sconces every 2.5 to 3 m and keep them at a uniform height. Flanking a mirror or bed, match the spacing to the object, typically 70 to 100 cm apart, centred on it.

Can a swing-arm wall light be used for reading in bed?

Yes, that's exactly what it's made for. Mounted beside the bed, the arm pulls the light out over your book and folds back against the wall when not in use, freeing the nightstand and keeping the beam off your partner.

What's the difference between an up-and-down light and a normal sconce?

A standard sconce usually throws light in one main direction (up, down or diffused). An up-and-down light deliberately splits the beam both ways, grazing the wall with two cones of light for a more dramatic, architectural effect.

Can I start with a plug-in wall light and hardwire it later?

Yes. Many people fit a plug-in version first, then have an electrician convert it to a hidden, hardwired connection during later decorating. Choose a model that's offered in both versions if you think you'll switch.

What's the best wall light for a hallway?

Evenly spaced sconces or up-and-down lights work best in a hallway, mounted around eye level (150 to 170 cm) every 2.5 to 3 m. They wash the walls, make a narrow corridor feel wider and avoid the flat look of a single ceiling light.

Do wall lights get hot?

With the LED bulbs we supply, barely, LEDs run far cooler than old halogen fittings. Metal shades closest to the bulb may feel warm after long use, but the fixtures are designed and rated to sit safely against the wall.

How do I hide the cord on a plug-in wall light?

Plug-in models come with a fabric or metal cord you can run neatly down to the nearest socket. Use the supplied clips to follow the wall edge, route it behind furniture, or fit a slim paintable cord cover for an almost-hidden finish.

Give the walls the light the ceiling can't.
