Good outdoor light is an invitation, not a floodlight.

The light outside your door does more than help you find the keyhole, it tells visitors they're welcome and makes the house feel lived-in from the street. Most of our outdoor range is solar, so there's no wiring and no running cost. This is a short guide to lighting the outside of your home.

Pavo's Outdoor Wall Light
Solar powered garden light glowing along a path at dusk

Solar outdoor lights. Light that costs nothing to run.

Our solar range charges from daylight and switches on automatically at dusk, no wiring, no electrician, no running cost. Post lights mark a path, lawn spikes wash a border, and the moon lamp glows softly in a flowerbed. Set them where the sun reaches and they look after themselves.

They suit gardens, paths and borders where running a cable would be a hassle.

The best garden light is the one that switches itself on.

Outdoor wall light beside a front door

Outdoor wall lights. The handshake of the house.

A wall light beside the door is the oldest trick in exterior lighting and still the best. It lights the entrance, frames the doorway and gives the façade a sense of welcome. Our outdoor wall lights include up-and-down and two-way designs that graze the wall with light.

Check the product page for the weather rating of any wall exposed to rain.

A light at the door says more than any doormat.

The things people actually ask before buying outdoor lights.

Do your solar lights need any wiring?

No. Our solar outdoor lights are completely wireless, they charge from daylight through a built-in panel and switch on automatically at dusk. You simply place or push them in where they get a few hours of sun. No electrician, no cable, no running cost.

How long do solar lights stay on at night?

After a good day's charge, most run for 6 to 8 hours, comfortably through the evening. Run-time is shorter in deep winter or after cloudy days, since there's less daylight to charge from. Place the panel where it gets the most direct sun for the longest glow.

Will solar lights work in winter or on cloudy days?

They still work, but for less time. Shorter, greyer days mean a smaller charge and a shorter glow. For spots that must be reliable year-round (a main entrance, for example), a mains-powered outdoor wall light is the steadier choice.

Are your outdoor lights weatherproof?

Yes, our outdoor range is built for permanent outdoor use, with sealed housings and weather-resistant finishes. For a wall or fixture in a fully exposed position, check the weather rating noted on its product page and match it to how sheltered the spot is.

Can I install an outdoor wall light myself?

Solar and battery models, yes, they just mount with a couple of screws. For any mains-powered outdoor wall light wired to your electrics, we recommend a qualified electrician, outdoor electrical work is regulated for safety in most regions.

What colour temperature are your outdoor lights?

Warm white (around 3000K), inviting, flattering to brick and planting, and far less attractive to insects than cold blue-white light. It's the temperature we use across almost the whole range.

Do outdoor lights come with bulbs?

Most of our outdoor lights have integrated LEDs built in, there's no separate bulb to buy or replace, and they're rated to last many years. Any model that takes a replaceable bulb says so, and includes one.

Will warm outdoor light attract insects?

Far less than cool white. Insects are drawn to blue and UV-rich light, so the warm white (around 3000K) we use keeps them to a minimum while still looking inviting.

How do solar lights switch on and off?

Automatically. A built-in sensor detects dusk and switches the light on, then off again at dawn (or when the battery runs low). There's nothing to set, and nothing to remember.

Can I use a spotlight to light up a tree?

Yes, our outdoor spotlight is made for exactly that. Aim it up into the canopy for a dramatic uplight, or along a wall to graze the texture. The head adjusts so you can fine-tune the angle once it's in the ground.

Are the materials rust-proof?

Our outdoor pieces use weather-resistant housings and finishes chosen to handle rain and seasons. As with any outdoor metal, the most exposed coastal spots are hardest on finishes, check the product page if you're right by the sea.

Can outdoor lights be left on all night?

Yes. Solar models manage this themselves, glowing from dusk until the battery runs low. Mains LED wall lights draw very little power, so leaving them on costs little; pair them with a dusk-to-dawn sensor for hands-off convenience.

Do you sell festoon or string lights?

Our current outdoor focus is solar path, post and decorative lights, outdoor wall lights, and accent spotlights. The range changes seasonally, so check the outdoor collection for the latest, or sign up to hear when new styles land.

What's the difference between a solar light and a mains outdoor light?

A solar light charges itself from daylight and needs no wiring, ideal for paths, borders and spots far from a socket. A mains outdoor light wires into your electrics for constant, weather-independent brightness, better for a main entrance you rely on every night.
